Clearwater Gears Up to Pick a New Mayor

CLEARWATER -- City council meets Monday (27th) for the first time since Frank Hibbard resigned the mayor's office a week ago.

At the 1:30 p.m. special meeting, council members will decide how to go about selecting someone to fill out the remainder of Hibbard's term.

Under Clearwater's council-manager form of government, the mayor occupies Seat 1 on the city council. Clearwater communications director Joelle Castelli says council can ask for nominations and select a mayor from the community. It could decide to appoint one of the current council members to the mayor's seat and nominate someone else to replace them. It could also choose to hold a special election. The city has 30 days to chart a course.

Hibbard resigned abruptly last Monday, saying he was not the person to lead the city any longer. Disagreements with City Council included a clash over plans for a new City Hall.
