The first trailer for the highly anticipated Little Women remake has finally debuted. Showcasing the star-studded cast, including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson and Meryl Streep, the preview will have devoted fans of Louisa May Alcott's book, as well as the classic 1994 adaptation, excited for more.
Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig, Little Women follows the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth, as they come of age in the aftermath of the Civil War. Tomboyish Jo yearns for more from her life than aspiring to marriage, despite being told over and over again that's the best she can hope for. âWomen have minds and they have souls, as well as just hearts,â Jo, played by Ronan, says at the end of the trailer, capturing the spirit of the classic tale. âAnd theyâve got ambition, and theyâve got talent, as well as just beauty. Iâm so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for, Iâm so sick of it!â
âWe wanted it to feel like the movie feels, which is both classical and fresh,â Gerwig told People of the trailer. âBut itâs really about these characters and these relationships that have meant so much to me. And then itâs also infused with this mutual energy and this exuberance. And I think that thatâs what the actors brought to the film and thatâs what cinematography captured.â
âWe wanted it to feel light on its feet," the director continues. "And even though it does take place in the 19th Century we in no way wanted it to feel like it was something that was past. We wanted it to feel like it was present right now."
Gerwig's Little Women is the eight adaptation of the classic novel. It arrives in theaters on Christmas Day.
